Oma's Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

It's June, my birthday month! A few days ago, I received an early birthday present from my grandmother, Oma. I get excited about receiving gifts from Oma. She is very creative so her gifts are always creative. This year, she sent me a book. The book is full of tabs listing various meal courses. It's perfect! It's a book full of empty pages for me to fill with my own recipes. It took me about 10 minutes to notice that she had put together several note cards with some recipes of her own as well as recipes from my great grandmother.

I couldn't wait to see which recipes she sent me. Growing up, Oma always had delicious baked treats and during the holidays I remember the smell of different squashes baking with onion, garlic and parmesan cheese!

I was lucky enough to grow up with many great cooks in my family to learn from. I had not yet had the pleasure of making one of Oma's recipes so I decided to jump right in. My first recipe is Hot Fudge Sundae Cake.

Ingredients:

1 Cup flour

3/4 Cup sugar

2 T. cocoa powder

2 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt

1/2 Cup milk

2 T. vegetable oil

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 Cup chopped nuts (optional)

1 Cup brown sugar (packed)

1/4 Cup cocoa powder

1 3/4 Cupt hottest tap water

Directions:

In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, sugar, 2 T. cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix in milk, oil and vanilla with a fork until smooth. Stir in nuts. Spread evenly into ungreased 9x9x2 baking dish. Sprinkle with brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Pour hot water over batter. Bake for 40 minutes in 350 degree oven. Let stand 15 minutes before serving with ice cream.
